Sonia McMullen
Sonia is a painter and mixed-media artist based on the Isle of Wight, working primarily with oil, charcoal, gold & pastel. Her works share an ethereal aesthetic that blend abstraction with depictions of the natural world. Her inspiration comes from the natural environment living on the IOW, the open spaces and its changing light.
Depictions of island spaces use a soft colour palette and minimalist compositions with diffuse forms. These are conceptualised in thin layers and minimalist texture to contribute to a weightless aesthetic.

When painting the distinctive bee range she uses expressive brush strokes which elevate the bees from the every day to become both subject and symbol of resilience and fragility.
In addition to painting, Sonia is a PSE tutor (remotely) to post-graduate students of art, design, fashion and communication at the University of the Arts London with an emphasis on understanding and responding to the climate crisis.
