Philip Chambers
Phil works in his studio creating his wonderfully textured and dreamy Island views from photos taken while out exploring the island. Due to some sight deterioration Phil has had to alter his approach to creating his paintings over the years. He is not defined by his sight issue and doesn't take no for an answer when finding his way around creative problems. It was inspiring to speak to him when he came to the Gallery.
His inspiration comes from the intensity of the changes of light and colour that can be found at the point where the sky, the sea and the coast meet: thus creating the formations of shape and texture that are the island’s iconic and beautiful coastline.

Phil says "I use magnification software to digitally enlarge these images onto a screen. From here I can adjust horizontal points, focal points and visual pathways to create a composition. I do not attempt to create a direct copy of an image but a visual portrayal of how I see the subject and its light, colour and connection to its surrounding environment.
This process may take many hours or even days before I am ready to use these images as a basis for my next painting. I use a variety of magnifiers when applying the paint to the canvas."
Phil predominantly uses palette knives to apply the paint. However during the initial stage the outline of shape and structure is laid down with a medium sized brush using raw umber diluted with turpentine. Then it is over to the palette knives.
(On occasion some brush work will be used to create a particular effect.)
