Colour has always been at the centre of everything for me. Graduating in 1985 from Kingston with a Fashion Degree, I found my way through many creative careers, from childrenswear designer to lecturer, potter to painter.

Although originally from Yarmouth, I have lived in New York and Southwest France and it was there, not far from the Bassin d’Arcachon that I became focussed on painting. I became fixated with anything to do with the sea.

Returning to England I combined painting with my love of teaching and now run regular classes and workshops in my converted caravan studio, set in rural West Wight. I also run courses on line - please ask for details from the Gallery. Whether you are visiting the Island or live on the Island I can offer classes and 1 to 1 tutor and mentor guidance.

More recently my work has been leaning towards abstraction, using a variety of media and texture but always using plenty of vibrant colour. Subjects include deep seas, boats, shorelines, buoys, masts and general coastal motifs.

My work is exhibited across the Island, on the mainland and has journeyed overseas! I enjoy a commission and have worked with many clients to create something special for a particular space - please contact the Gallery for more details and get a costing for your perfect piece.

Penny Absolom

Penny moved to the Island in late 2014 after completing her studies at Falmouth school of Art. Born in Reading, she was inspired by her Mother’s accomplished art career and honed her talent from a very young age.

Her fascination for the natural world has greatly influenced her strong desire to create. Lured and intrigued by the aesthetics of colour and observing intricate beauty she portrays naturally occurring dramatic light effects that leave you in awe.

Mark Buck ARSMA

Mark Buck ARSMA

Mark Buck, studied for a degree in illustration at Bower Ashton Art College in Bristol. He has illustrated for magazines, newspapers, books, advertising hoardings and played guitar at the Jazz Cafe in London, on occasion with Bo Diddley!

These days Mark lives in a small village near Petworth. He likes to travel, always with a sketchbook and camera and the result is a growing series of watercolour paintings.
His watercolours are mainly painted en plein air always on St Cuthbert’s Millford 300gsm cold pressed watercolour paper.

Raymond Burt

Ray's working life was primarily in Aviation with painting and drawing being relegated to a hobby. However, over the years he has completed many paintings in Oils, Watercolours, Pen and Ink, and Acrylics, featuring many diverse subjects such as portraits, landscapes, buildings, illustration, etc.

Matthew Chambers

Matthew Chambers

Matthew began his journey in 1993 - 1996 by becoming apprentice potter to Philip Wood in Nunney, the Somerset village where he grew up. In 1999 he attended Bath School of Art, followed with an MA at the Royal College of Art in London from 2002. This included a scholarship with the Nelson Woo foundation.

He has won numerous Awards and Prizes including - The Ceramic Review Prize which was awarded ('06) at Ceramic Art London and The Poole Pottery Prize for Ceramic Shape ('02). He currently lives and makes on the Isle of Wight after moving there on a residency at Quay Arts in 2004. Matt is a member of Contemporary Applied Arts London ('07)

After a visit to Hepworth's garden when he began Art school his approach changed forever. He was blown away by shape and form rather than practicality and function. His thinking did a back flip into the style and forms he produces today!

Matthew is able to accept Commissions so as such we don't have pieces in the Gallery but are able to take you through the designing of a piece and attain a quoted price for the piece for you. Maintaining contact throughout the creative process. : )

Philip Chambers

Philip Chambers

Phil works in his studio creating his wonderfully textured and dreamy Island views from photos taken while out exploring the island. Due to some sight deterioration Phil has had to alter his approach to creating his paintings over the years. He is not defined by his sight issue and doesn't take no for an answer when finding his way around creative problems. It was inspiring to speak to him when he came to the Gallery.

His inspiration comes from the intensity of the changes of light and colour that can be found at the point where the sky, the sea and the coast meet: thus creating the formations of shape and texture that are the island’s iconic and beautiful coastline.

Shane Couch ASMA

Shane Couch ASMA

The sea has always held Shane's fascination, from the stories of the naval experiences of his elders, to growing up in the historic port of Liverpool. While working as an aeronautical engineer, he pursued his art. Without any formal training Shane Couch began showing on the Isle of Wight in 1992. Within two years he established himself as a full-time professional artist.

Full of exacting detail, he expands beyond mere draftsmanship to impart creative, fluid visions of the sea and superb compositional arrangements. His theory is that the yachts and ships must be painted as they were built, in layers from the keel up. Over the years he has refined his craft - in both senses of the word. He has often referred to his method as 'Abstract Realism' due to the abstract application of each brush stroke that, as you step back, becomes the super real living image before your eyes.

There are 2 strings to Shane's talent. The sea captures his heart with its colour, shape and form. He captures the majestic rollers and the delicate foam bubbles in equal detail and connection. Shane once said to me that he knows when one of his wave pieces is finished as it seems to continue to move and and break on the rocks or shore of the scene.

The wave is held in that moment of curl and the spume forever hovers in the air but the eyes still think its moving.

Daphne Ellman SWA

Daphne Ellman SWA

Due to Daphne's fathers employment she spent her childhood moving around England. This opened her eyes to the diversity of landscape we have in our country. A love of animals and a natural ability to draw combined together and she began her artistic journey.

Daphne says "From roaming the hedgerows for reference of birds, squirrels, mice etc. I discovered the beauty of the trees and plants, the wider vista, the farmyard and so on. One thing lead to another and I had to paint them."

In her mid twenties she made a leap of faith and made painting her living. Securing a place with an agency and becoming an illustrator producing artwork for companies around the world for the next 30 years. Increased and varied subject matter along with various new mediums resulted.

Jim Few

Jim is an amazing animal portrait artist. He prefers to work in larger sizes mainly but can do most sizes of portrait. He is self taught and has a huge following for his work.

Ann Hawksley

Ann obtained BA Hons from Maidstone College of Art in 1973. After teaching art in Leeds, she and her sister worked as storyboard artists in London. In 1984 she concentrated on portrait painting before diversifying into other subject matter whilst still working to commission.

"My work is figurative but retains some ambiguity. My style is painterly and I work with strong light and shade. My painting is more about suggestion than explanation and my figures are gestural rather than detailed. The body language of children is a fascination."

Andrew Herridge

Andrew Herridge

Andrew Herridge paints the Island's sea and land in a way that is pleasing to the eye, thoughtful and descriptive. The works evolve organically, beginning with everyday observation. Andrew goes on to explore the relationship between what exists and our perceived reality.

Andrew says, “Entering my studio, its as if in my mind's eye alights on a Sea Eagle's lofty cliff perch. I glance at and beyond the sea ....thoughts and paint flow . . . . I am absorbed by my surroundings and begin to paint an emotional response.“

Josh Hibberd

Lover of the out door life, a surfer and Landscape gardener. Josh is a free spirited creative using aerial views, showing natures designs and colours. He expresses the movement and beauty of the sea, surf and coastline and our interaction with it.

Josh creates his top down paintings from images he takes from his drone. He paints in acrylics on a variety of sizes of canvas. Adding small details which delight the eye and surprise you. From surfers carrying their boards to the water with long shadows...to a patchwork of colourful towels and parasols on the beach with the sun at full height. You will be transported to the shore, the sights, smells, sounds, colours and textures you find there. Josh's works will perfectly bring the calm and peace of the coast into your home.

Andrew Hird

Andrew Hird is an award winning contemporary Impressionist painter of landscapes, cities and the English coast. All his work is from personal experience based on location sketches in pencil or paint. These "plein air" studies provide the working material for studio paintings, always referring back to the feeling of standing in the environment. Often he will return to favourite locations many times, recording the subject over changing seasons and times of day.

Harriet Hue

Pen and pencil were my first love, later with time and confidence I came to feel the same with brush and paint. Colour still, to this day, brings a smile to my face and being able to use it every day is a huge reward!
With a first-class Degree in Fine Art and then even more education after; learning computer design such as Adobe Illustrator and other art courses to hone my skills. I have managed to realize my childhood dream of becoming an artist!

George Kan

George says, "The crab series of paintings has been going on for over a decade. It's very much influenced by the many crab shells collected over the years and housed in the family bathroom, and in the grandparents' bathroom."

"I'm interested in the peaceful ritual of beachcombing and shell collecting and the opportunity this creates to reconnect with nature and the natural self, its traditions, the satisfaction in its repetition, and the joy of discovery. Beach Combing and collecting is a British tradition. Queen Victoria herself had a large collection of natural history pieces and beach combed items at Osborne house on the Isle of Wight."

The Crab focused pieces were some of the first works George sold professionally, whilst studying in London, and he has been exhibiting them in Seaview Art Gallery since 2012.

Steve Kinder

Steve's work is a popular choice for capturing the essence of Seaview and the Island generally. He regularly comes over to the Island and spends the day painting En Plein Air. On his next visit he delivers the pieces he created the previous trip giving a steady drip of lovely works showing the everchanging Island as time passes.

He is inspired by the quote, below by Anna Pavord...

Steve has always found great comfort and joy being outdoors and in the landscapes and beachscapes he loves and portrays so well. This passion drives him to record his reaction to, and the essence of, the scene in front of him in his paintings large and small.

Steve says..
"Because I work mainly on location - En Plein air - I need to work with speed and expression to capture the often-changing light and moment in time. My technique would be best described as loose and impressionistic."

Ivan Lapper ARCA RSMA

Ivan Lapper ARCA RSMA

Ivan Lapper was born in Bilston and attended Wolverhampton College of Art. He then went on to the Royal College of Art from 1959 to 1962.

On leaving art college, he worked as a freelance artist providing illustrations for many magazines and books, such as The Radio Times and the Readers Digest.

Ivan has a strong connection with water and especially the sea. The light reflecting from it and the colours and layers of light beneath the water. He captures the essence of a place and you can feel the breeze and salt in the air as you look at his works.

Steve Miles NAPA

Steve Miles NAPA

Originally from Warley in the West Midlands, Steve moved to the Isle of Wight in 1994 and worked as a Graphic Designer for various Island companies, and is currently working for Stainless Games Ltd. as a Graphic Designer and Artist on videogames.

He began painting graffiti in the early 1980s under the tag Toxic363.

Steve says, "At an early age (around 11) I was introduced to what was, at the time, a little known cultural phenomenon from the States called 'Hip Hop'. I was not much good at the Breaking but I was intrigued by the Graffiti section of the article that featured the Bronx writer Brim. I was really into drawing so I started to get in to the Graff by practicing my own letters every day at school and often into the early hours of the morning at home. I was hooked like some kind of Alphabet junkie! I spent my teenage years painting Graffiti, and was in various Crews over the years, but the one I have stuck with is TIC (the Imperial Creations)."

Steve decided to take his artwork more seriously and get into Graphic Design as a career, and in 1992 enrolled in a general art and design course at Stourbridge Art College.

Fiona Moatt NAPA

Fiona Moatt NAPA

Fiona is based on the Isle of Wight, and works from her studio in Freshwater on the IOW.
Fiona has her own method of working by combining acrylic paint and collage to produce layered textural images. The technique that she has developed involves 'pre-painting' paper with acrylic which is then torn and applied to the surface of the canvas or board.

Initially using plenty of water the paint is allowed to move freely before building up thicker layers of either muted or vibrant colour and whilst the acrylic is still wet, folding the paper allows the painted surfaces to merge, creating pattern and texture.

Living on the Isle of Wight Fiona naturally draws upon its diverse coastline as a major source for her work. She is particularly fascinated by the changing light and how that affects the colour and mood of the scene. Whether that is throughout a day or during the changing seasons.

Bethany Moore is a visual artist motivated by natural elements and the act of quietly observing them. She paints and draws to spark curiosity and encourage connection with the natural world, both for herself and the viewer.

Lil Nutter

After studying and living in London for many years, I returned to the Isle of Wight with my young family.
I have been painting professionally since 2003 and over the years have produced mainly textured, abstract expressionistic seascapes in acrylic paint, from my studio in Cowes.
I have always adored the varied coastlines of the Island and beyond, and I especially love painting the seaweed bedecked, craggy shorelines at low tide.

Guido Oakley

Sculptor - Guido Oakley - A multi faceted artist who studied at Shelley Park and Central St.Martins. He has recently been recognised for his work with resin and exquisite crystals, minerals and pure metals.

His show stopping sculptures full of fine grade A crystals are beautiful and powerful and have a transformational aspect to them. Not so much art for arts sake but Art for the "Whole" person - body, mind. and spirit. He brings together a fusion of exquisite beautiful sculpture and the transforming qualities of crystals and precious stones.

His sculptures have sold for tens of thousands of pounds. Some have sold in quality auctions from One Marylebone to Mayfair One to The Amber Lounge, Monaco.

Ian Piper PWS EAGMA

Ian Piper PWS EAGMA

Ian Piper studied fine art at Norwich School of Art and at The Slade School of Fine Art, London University. The traditionally based disciplines of draughtsmanship, composition, colour and tonal values were what impressed Ian at The Slade where the influence of Sir William Coldstream was very evident.

Looking back over the early influences that have had a bearing on his work Ian cites the names of Henry Tonks, Sir William Nicholson and Sir John Lavery as painters who were inspirational.

While working mainly in England and Scotland, travel has been important in giving Ian an opportunity to experience landscapes under a different light. The soft occluded light of the English coast gives an effect quite different from the vivid colour and deep shadows seen under the fierce light of the Cote d’Azur. And yet again the landscapes that he has painted in the dry heat of Australia show yet another phase in his work.
