Andrew Hird

Andrew Hird is a painter of city and maritime landscapes, his work focusing purely on celebrating the world around us. He presents images that reveal moments of observation that we feel familiar with but often pass unnoticed in busy and distracted lives. All his work is from personal experience and starts with location sketches in pencil or paint. These plein air studies provide the working material for his studio paintings, always referring back to the inspiration of standing in the environment.

Light, line and perspective provide the structure for much of Andrew’s work. Whether it be the reflections in a rain-washed cityscape, the far reaching views and open skies of the English coast, or the warmth of an Italian landscape, he paints to share his personal world and hopefully transmit some of the pleasure he finds in recording it.

He has won various awards including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Paint Live competition in 2015, the Artist Magazine Purchase prize at Patchings in 2016, plus the Great Art and Peoples’ Choice awards in 2017. He was selected as a featured artist for Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year series in 2019 and his painting of Gateshead Millennium Bridge was selected by the Royal Navy for their heritage room at HMS Calliope. He holds regular solo exhibitions in central London, and has exhibited at the Mall Galleries, Chelsea Art Society, Patchings Festival, and the Royal Society of Marine artists. His work is held in collections around the UK and as far afield as New York, Canada, and California.
