Sara Netherway

My parents moved to the Island when I was three, I come from a family of collectors and makers and lived amongst many objects gathered from generations of family members. As a child I spent alot of time examining and drawing these ancient treasures, wondering about their owners and how the objects fitted into their lives.

I studied at Winchester and then graduated from Cumbria Institute of the Arts with a Degree in Fine Art.
I returned to the Island and worked in-house as a graphic designer and then product designer, creating designs and illustrations on homeware and childrens products for high street retailers. After the birth of my son I decided it was time to work on my own product lines so I created many handmade greeting card ranges, giftwrap and notebook collections. Exhibiting at major retail trade shows in London I took on a freelance sales rep and sold to just over 100 lovely independent retailer customers around England and Wales.

Since 2013 I have been making portraits and editorial illustration which has been printed in magazines and non-fiction books as well as private and corporate commissions. Clients I've been working with include Hachette UK, Smithsonian Magazine and The Institute of Engineering and Technology in Savoy Place, London.

My main influences come from history particularly portraiture over the ages. When I'm commissioned to make a portrait I love the challenge of making it not only look but 'feel' like the sitter. I work many mediums including oil and currently colour pencil. I like the blend of creating a portrait from a more formal/traditional perspective in a medium considered less traditional for portrait work.
