Jon Prothero

Jon Prothero, a painter born in South Wales UK who calls his painting style 'Omni Dimensionalism.'

Omni Dimensionalism is best described as the way an eclectic range of influences and techniques are used to create a potent cocktail of artistic fusion. My style often moves seamlessly from emotive, physical, free expressionism to the more subtle approaches of intelligible 'mark making', This can be seen within the explosions of colour, dripping, tainted, tears or a sensitively applied translucent renaissance glaze. I do whatever i think it takes to bring the vibration of life to a work.

The roots of my style can be found in my childhood tactile experiences, scrawling doodles with a broken branch in muddy riverbanks, exploding mud piles with a fist, fingers swimming with sensual pleasure in the River Ebbw. Hands against rock, tree bark and climbing up the coal slag heaps of the Blackvien. For along side conventional techniques I often use broken branches, sticks, bare hands or broken slate to apply, scrape, inscribe or explode my work over the canvas. My work is very tactile heavy with thick paint juxtaposed with fluid mixtures that weep into textural landscapes.

Works generally range from approximately 30 cm x 30 cm up to 120 x 170 cm with my most popular selling size 100 x 100 cm. I sometimes use mixed media but mostly my choice is acrylic. I find Acrylic the most suitable medium for my working style for it dries much faster than oils and allows me to layer and work in greater depth! My work as you can see is abstract so my subject matter is not representational in the conventional sense of the word. However I still like to think that my painting acts as a signpost for the changing relationship we are moving towards within the world.

On the one hand the differing layers within my paintings attempt to show a way of seeing the world, (which although made of many diverse areas) finds us all interconnected. While another aspect of my painting seeks to show both pain and pleasure infused into the canvas, a metaphor for an enlightening transformation. A transformation we must all go through if we are to truly break down divisiveness and embrace love and respect for each other, the world and the planet.

After passing all art exams with top grades at college Jon later went on to The university college of Wales were he studied a groundbreaking mix of theory and practice called Visual studies. Today he is starting to expand beyond the UK borders having collectors in many parts of the world including, Italy, Australia, and America
